Alisa Hernandez came to McCarty Weight Loss Center seeking gastric banding, but after talking through all the options with Dr. McCarty, she opted for gastric bypass surgery. She has since lost more than 150 pounds.
We asked her to share some reflections on her experience, and here’s what she had to say:
What made you decide to go through with the procedure?
I was suffering from bad acid reflux and was not comfortable in my own skin. I came to McCarty Weight Loss Center to talk about the Lap Band, but Dr. McCarty described each procedure and together we decided on gastric bypass.
What fears did you have before going through with this surgery?
I didn’t have many fears because I was so uncomfortable as I was that anything had to be better. If I had to name one fear, it would be not knowing what I was getting myself into.
What brought you to Dr. McCarty?
Dr. McCarty did my sister’s bypass surgery and revision in the past. She talked so highly of him that I knew I had to meet him.
What’s something you can do now that you couldn’t do before?
Sleep flat on my back. It’s amazing!
What are you plans for the future with this “new life”?
I always wanted to run on a treadmill and now I can (even though it’s not my favorite). My life is all about making the most of each day and using my 24 hours to live to the fullest. I’m a single woman who used to stay trapped indoors, but now I’ve started going out and dating.
How do you stay motivated?
I’m excited to get up every day. I look forward to dancing. I live by the quote: “Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today.”
Do you have a new favorite exercise routine?
Dancing! I go twice a week — I love to hit the country music scene.
What should people should know about this procedure, weight loss and Dr. McCarty?
Dr. McCarty relates well to people. He has been on the top and the bottom and pulled himself back up. He gets down to your level without making you feel uncomfortable. We bonded and talked honestly to each other. I love that when I go there for my checkups, he’ll say: “You are amazing. Who are you? You have just blossomed.”
I never dreamed I would be the weight I am, let alone wear a size 4! I told myself, “For every 25 lbs. I’m going to add an inch to my heels to boost my confidence.” I’m about to have to stop because I’m sitting at 5-inch heels!
