By making the decision to have weight loss surgery, you’re committing to making permanent life changes. But weight loss surgery is just the first step on your journey to a new you. While bariatric surgery is a fantastic tool that has helped thousands of people take back their lives, it is not an overnight cure for obesity.
Success on your journey will take hard work and motivation to change your daily habits. It will not always be easy, but we are here to help and encourage you along the way. If you are preparing for weight loss surgery or perhaps you have recently undergone surgery, here are a few reminders we hope will be an encouragement to you on your path to health.
Success is a marathon, not a sprint.
As you begin this process and start following the pre-op diet, you will begin to see the pounds come off. After surgery, it will seem at times like the extra weight is melting away, as rapid weight loss following surgery is typical. However, there will be times along the way when you will hit a plateau and see little to no weight loss during the course of a few days or even a few weeks. Don’t let those moments discourage you. Stick to the plan, increase your protein, change up your workout routine and keep moving forward. Most weight loss surgery patients will achieve their goal weight within 12 months of surgery.
It will get easier.
It takes time to establish new habits. On average, it takes at least 21 days to make a lifestyle change become a habit, but in some cases, depending on the change you are trying to make, it can take longer. There will be ups and downs along your journey, and at times it’ll make you feel like you’re taking one step forward and two steps back. Keep pushing ahead. With time, you will overcome the temptation to slip back into old habits and your positive lifestyle changes will feel like second nature.
It starts within.
Remember, you are doing this for you and no one else. Be confident and take pride in your journey. Celebrate the small milestones along the way. Enjoy doing the things you once were unable to do because of the weight and look forward to new achievements as you continue your journey toward a healthier you.
Your success will take time and determination. Find support in others who are on a similar path. Step out of your comfort zone and join an exercise group. Surround yourself with people who will offer you encouragement and motivation and avoid spending too much time with people who have a negative influence.
