While some may view weight loss surgery as the “easy way out,” that notion is nothing more than a myth. Achieving weight loss surgery success entails not only reaching your weight loss goal but also maintaining that weight loss. As such, it requires preparation, dedication, determination and self-discipline.
If you are considering a surgical solution, or have already scheduled your bariatric procedure at our First Baptist weight loss surgery center, here are five tips to increase your chances of achieving long-term weight loss success.
1) Do your homework.
Set yourself up for success after weight loss surgery by planning ahead. Prior to surgery, take time to read and study all the information provided by your weight loss center. Review the nutritional guidelines specified for both your pre- and post-op diet, including all the vitamins and supplements you should be taking. Then, be sure you’ve purchased all the supplies and food you will need to stick to your post-op diet, including a quality protein supplement.
2) Don’t deviate from the plan.
Follow all post-op instructions and post-op diet guidelines. The post-op diet isn’t merely a suggestion — it is of vital importance, especially in the first days and weeks following any bariatric procedure. This diet includes a strict liquid phase immediately following the weight loss procedure itself, then a period of soft foods and, finally, the incorporation of solids. Drink plenty of water (at least 64 ounces per day), but observe all instructions regarding drinking water before, during and after meals. The strictly regulated post-op diet gives your body time to recover and heal from the procedure while you adapt to your new way of life.
3) Set clear goals.
Work with your weight loss doctor, fitness trainer and/or nutritionist to develop specific, measurable and attainable goals suited to your body as well as your needs. Keep in mind that while many patients experience rapid weight loss after surgery, you may be among those who only lose weight gradually. Be careful not to compare yourself to others. Instead, know your goal and focus on taking the day-to-day steps necessary to its achievement.
4) Surround yourself with support.
Accountability and support are essential and play a critical role in your weight loss success following surgery. Surround yourself with people who will respect your new lifestyle, motivate and encourage you. When you begin to struggle, your support system can provide the inspiration you need to stay on track. Attend support group meetings offered by your weight loss surgery center, and seek out friends who have made a serious commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
5) Keep all your follow-up appointments.
Your relationship with your bariatric surgeon does not end once your procedure is complete. You will be expected to keep appointments with your surgeon during the weeks following surgery to ensure you are not experiencing any post-op complications. Additionally, the long-term follow-up appointments you are expected to keep will help you stay on track and identify any potential issues before they become a detriment to your success. Do not skip any prescribed post-op appointments, no matter how routine, and don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment if you are struggling or have any questions or concerns in the days, weeks, months and even years after undergoing your weight loss procedure.
The key to weight loss success is to understand that you do not have to do it alone. With the support of your First Baptist weight loss center staff, your health and weight loss goals are well with reach.
